Following a decision aimed at saving 2.4 billion euros, Spain's Socialist government passed a law requiring doctors and pharmacies to prescribe generic drugs instead of brand-name drugs.

In Spain, medicines are paid partially by the state and by patients. Spanish doctors now have to fill prescriptions only giving details of active ingredients, dosages and format of the medicine that his patients will buy.
